Some tips for your holiday at Ile de Ré in Les Portes-en-Ré

  • Head for the beach to build sand castles, swim, surf, kayak or sail a catamaran. The water sports are amazing here! Tip: Plage du Gros Jonc. Just a 7 minute walk, with a broad sandy beach and a calm sea. Kids can have fun in the playground, skatepark, or on the football pitch and basketball court.
  • Ile de Ré is a mecca for cyclists. You can get to the wonderful nature areas and pretty villages fast and easy, thanks to the good network of bike paths. Peddle past the salt pans and the gorgeous coastline, through the woods to the little towns of Ars-en-Ré and Loix. Make your journey even more enjoyable with a picnic on the beach or a refreshing drink on a terrace.
  • Reach the most westerly part of Ile de Ré by bike in just 15 minutes. It’s called Phare de Baleines,or ‘The lighthouse of the whales.’ What a view. Blow away the cobwebs by the water, wander through the pretty park. If you’re feeling energetic, climb the 357 steps to the top of the old tower to get an even better view!. Then reward yourself with some of the freshest fish you’ll ever taste in one of the fantastic restaurants. Mmm!
  • A must see: the island’s capital, Saint-Martin-de-Re. A charming little place with a harbour, narrow streets, lots of terraces, quaint old houses and city walls. Highly recommended for a lovely day out!
  • Fancy dining out tonight? You’re spoiled for choice close by. Head for Rue Jules David or Rue de la Prée and take your pick from one of the many excellent restaurants there.
  • Hop on a boat in Saint-Martin-de-Ré…feel the cool breeze on your face as you gaze at the fabulous island coastline. This trip will have you feeling nice and Zen. What ’s your destination? La Rochelle, Ile d’Aix or Fort Boyard. There’s plenty of time to visit them all!
