Slovenia

Slovenia

One of the smallest European countries with only two million inhabitants offering a varied landscape and different climates.  The country as we know it today has only existed since 1991. It had previously been part of the Austrian dynasty and then, after a period of Italian domination, it became part of Yugoslavia after the second world war. Many people living on the coast speak Italian in addition to their native Slovenian.  In Yugoslavian times, Slovenians made it clear they could manage their own businesses successfully and the country's economy was more structured than the other Yugoslavian states.  As a result it came as no surprise that, out of all the other USSR-controlled countries, Slovenia was first to join the EU.  The original currency of 'toller' became the Euro in 2007.   The country has high mountains in the Julic Alps near the Austrian border where its highest mountain peak, the Triglav (trident), is found.  The Triglav is also pictured in the national flag.  In the southern area of Dolensjka are large nature reserves with thermal wells. The Slovenian coastline on the Adriatic Sea only measures 45km but it remains very popular with tourists.

Typical Slovenia

Close to the Italian border is the small city Lipica, known because of its white Lippizaner horses, a race with special characteristics. As an example they manage to jump up with all four feet at the same time (try, if you can). The first Lippizaner horse-breeding farm was founded by Austrian duke Karel, who bought the land from the bishop of Trieste to breed horses for hunting and the army. The horses from Lipica are famous for their character and excellent steady trot making them very fit for parading.

In the north mountain area a boat trip with a 'pletna' on lake Bled is very romantic.Do not forget to land on the tiny island and make a wish under the chapel's bell. The Postojna caves are very impressive, just as its train ride through the caves. At the coastline are nice old cities like Piran, Koper and Iszola. The Italian Trieste is just across the border.
