Hungary

Many people believe that the only river in Hungary is the Danube. However the Tisza river in the east and the Drava that runs along the Slovenian and Croatian border are also important rivers to the country. Before Hungary became an independent republic it had an interesting history. In Mediaeval times it was partly occupied by the Turks of the Ottoman Empire.  The Austrian Habsburg dynasty ruled the western regions with Buda, then a great cultural centre, as its capital.  Eventually the Turks were defeated and Hungary established unity with Austria and dual monarchy reigned by the marriage of Anna of Bohemia to Ferdinand of Austria.  After the World Wars and the communist rule, Hungary had been discovered by tourists, which made its economy soar.  A popular place for visitors is the beautiful capital of Budapest, which has 2.5 million inhabitants.  Lake Balaton is impressive; a 79km stretch of narrow inland sea that has a pleasant water temperature due to its shallow depth. Hungary also has plenty of nature areas including ten national parks. The eastern area of the country is mainly made up of 'pusta', a grassy landscape in a vast lowland area.

Typical Hungary

Hungary has had its golden years of football, too. On the list of world's greatest football players is also Ferenc Puskas. With him the Hungarian national team stayed unbeaten for four years from 1950 in 34 games, including the Olympic title in Helsinki. Later Puskas played as the leader of Real Madrid and won the European Cup in 1958, 1959 and 1960. Especially the 1960 final against Eintracht Frankfurt is well remembered by many Hungarians: Puskas scored four times – a record in a European Cup final. The Budapest stadium has his name.

The Lake Balaton swim contests at the end of July attract more and more swimmers and spectators every year. Siófok is the lake's most important bath resort, but also Balatonfured and Kesztheli are interesting cities. The Tihany peninsula is a nature area offering great wandering options. The capital Budapest at the Danube river has beautiful squares and buildings, among them is the large bastion in the city section Buda. Definitely worth a visit.
