Regional info
AuvergneFrance A thinly populated area with impressive scenery. Once it was hell on earth, now around 80 old volcanic craters still dominate the landscape making it look like the moon, but with fresh green colours and silent crater lakes. The fertile volcanic soil provides perfect growing conditions for flowers, turning it into a real walkers' paradise. Most volcanoes are in the national park 'Parc Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne'. Best known is the Puy de Dôme, with its narrow road to the top at 1465m where a fantastic view over the craters is your reward. Very touristy but unforgettable. Another giant is the Puy de Sancy (1885m), part of the winter sports area of Monts Dore that you can also visit by cable car in summer time. Though the volcanoes have not been active for many centuries, you may still take a hot well bubble bath in the spa resort of La Bourboule. The Auvergne area lies in the Massif Central, a high plateau where rivers like Dordogne, Allier and Tarn rise. The adjoining regions of Aveyron and Tarn offer much beautiful scenery too, but also leisure activities like mountain biking, wind surfing or water fun in the Lac de Pareloup. |

Typical AuvergneMillau has its huge bridge, but 200km up north is another colossus: the Viadic de Garabit. Comparing them is not really honest, because this bridge was built 120 years earlier. It is no surprise that the designer's name is Gustave Eiffel. Five years later he would build the well known tower in Paris, and it is obvious that to him this bridge was an exercise. Though the train bridge of Garabit is 'only' 122 metres high, the open steel construction is almost as impressive as its modern brother near Millau.

August is the month of the street theatre festival in Aurillac. In case of bad weather there's an alternative: the umbrella museum. Interesting is the mine museum near Decazeville, and for children the Garden of Eden of the Colombier castle. Of course you visit the 'Gorges du Tarn' ravines and the giant Millau bridge. The highest pillar is based next to the river near the village Peyre – it's unbelievable that the tiny line in the sky carries busy traffic.
