• Situated just before the bridge to Ile d'Oleron is the pleasant town of Marennes. From here, if the tide is low, you can walk from Bourcefranc to the fortress of Louvois.
• A few kilometers north is the proud citadel of Brouage and is well worth a visit.
• On the other side of the oyster beds is the city if Royan with its pleasant boulevards and good restaurants.
• The Cognac region is to the east. There are guided tours of the cellars of some famous brands of cognac.
