Not far from Marseille, but away from the bustle is the Chaîne de I'Estaque peninsula with the well-known town of Martigues. It's a lovely town situated between the sea and the Étang de Berre, one of the eastern inland lakes of the Camargue. Martigues is full of pretty streets with pleasant restaurants and bistros.

• A little further away is Les-Baux-de-Provence located on a 245m high rock plateau, with a beautiful view of the Provencal landscape. You can even see a stretch of white mountains of the Alpilles.

• Indulge yourself culturally in Nîmes and Avignon, famous for the Pope's palace and bridge.
